Walmart Return Policy: Return Windows, Receipts and Exceptions
This guide explains Walmart's return policy in plain English: how many days you get, which items have shorter windows, what happens without a receipt, and how fast refunds arrive. Every detail comes from Walmart's official return policy, linked in Sources. Policies change, so check the official page before you rely on it.

How many days do you have to return to Walmart?
Walmart's Return Policy (updated Oct 9, 2026) gives you 90 days after purchase or upon receipt to return or exchange most items. It applies to Walmart U.S. stores, Walmart.com and Walmart Business. Bring your store receipt or order number, and Walmart refunds your original form of payment. Your Walmart.com purchase history shows the last eligible return date for each item.
Some items have shorter or longer windows:
| Return window | Items |
|---|---|
| 2 days | Major appliances, such as full-size refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, ranges, washers and dryers (from accepted delivery) |
| 14 days | Most wireless phones; Marketplace collectibles and luxury items |
| 30 days | Consumer electronics; PCs and PC components; most Marketplace items; AppleCare+; Walmart Protection Plans; Verizon postpaid phones; cooling and heating; vacuums and floor care; electric bikes and scooters; hoverboards |
| 60 days | Contact lenses, hearing aids, prescription glasses |
| 90 days | Most items, plus home and garden equipment, tires, photo and personalized items, and Walmart+ membership (unless used or activated) |
| 365 days | Perennials, shrubs and trees (in store only) |
Major appliances: you get a full refund within 2 days of accepted delivery. Unopened, uninstalled ones in factory-sealed packaging can be returned for up to 30 days. Appliance returns aren't accepted in stores, so start them in the app or at walmart.com/returns. Marketplace appliance returns may carry up to a 20% restocking fee.
Walmart's holiday return window
Walmart's policy includes extended holiday returns: most items bought from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31. Walmart says some exceptions may apply, for example wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products and select seasonal and luxury goods. Marketplace seller participation varies.
Exchange-only and final sale items
Some items can only be exchanged once opened or used (new, unopened ones can still be returned for a full refund):
- Unlocked opened wireless phones: exchange only within 14 days
- Drones and projectors: exchange only within 30 days
- Air beds and air mattresses, power generators and durable medical equipment: exchange only within 90 days
Walmart and Marketplace sellers won't accept returns or give refunds for final sale items, including:
- Firearms and ammunition, airsoft and BB guns, crossbows and archery bows, pepper spray
- Prescription medications and devices
- Items containing pseudoephedrine, ephedrine or phenylpropanolamine
- Diabetic supplies (with Medicare-related exceptions), pregnancy and ovulation tests and home diagnostic test kits
- Trading cards (opened or unopened), precious metals
- Alcohol and tobacco
- Gift cards, prepaid phone and gaming cards, SIM cards, and downloadable games, software and video on demand
- Gas-powered recreational vehicles; used or mounted tires, wheels and rims
Consumer electronics and collectible bundles must be returned together to get a refund. Freight, oversized and heavy items can't be returned to stores, and furniture or grills must be fully disassembled first. Items with rechargeable batteries must include the original battery.
Returning to Walmart without a receipt
Lost the receipt? Walmart can try to look up store purchases with the debit or credit card you used, and online orders with your phone number or email.
No receipt at all? Walmart says:
- You must show a valid government-issued photo ID.
- If its refund verification process approves the return, you get a Walmart gift card (store credit).
- Walmart limits how many non-receipted returns you can make, and how often.
In Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, you need a receipt with a valid transaction number to get the sales tax refunded.
Gifts: items on a gift receipt can be exchanged, refunded to a Walmart gift card, or credited to the sender's original payment. Without a gift receipt, they can be exchanged or refunded to a Walmart gift card.
How to return something to Walmart
- Start the return in the Walmart app or at Walmart.com (no account? use walmart.com/returns).
- Choose a method: in store, curbside, free by mail, or a scheduled FedEx pickup. Walmart+ members get extra home pickup options.
- Wipe devices such as phones, tablets and laptops before returning them.
- Marketplace items are returned through your Walmart account using the seller's instructions. Some can be dropped off at a Walmart store. Sellers may charge restocking fees of up to 20%.
How Walmart refunds work
With a receipt, refunds go back to your original payment method:
| Paid with | Refund to | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|
| Cash or check | Cash | Immediate (per Walmart's returns page) |
| Credit card | Same card, Walmart gift card or Walmart Balance | Up to 7 days |
| Debit card with PIN | Same card, gift card, Walmart Balance or cash | Up to 7 days |
| Walmart gift card, Walmart Cash or Walmart Balance | Same | Up to 3 hours |
| PayPal | PayPal, cash or Walmart gift card | Up to 7 days |
Refunds to a debit or credit card without a receipt may take up to 7 business days. For Marketplace items, the seller verifies the return within 2 business days of receiving it, and the refund reaches your original payment method within 7 business days.
How to never miss the Walmart return window
- Keep the receipt and the packaging for 90 days. Walmart itself recommends this.
- Take a photo of the receipt, or buy through the app or Walmart.com so your purchase history keeps it.
- Know the short windows: 2 days for big appliances, 14 for phones, 30 for electronics.
- Inspect appliances at delivery. Walmart says to tell the driver about damage or refuse delivery.
- Set a reminder a few days before the deadline.
Every Item, our upcoming iPhone app (coming soon to the App Store), is built for this: it saves your receipts and reminds you before the return deadline.
