Target Return Policy: Return Windows, Receipts and Exceptions

Last updated

This guide explains Target's return policy in plain English: how many days you get, which items have shorter windows, what happens without a receipt, and how fast refunds arrive. Every detail comes from Target's official help pages, linked in Sources. Policies change, so check the official page before you rely on it.

How many days do you have to return to Target?

According to Target's returns help page, most unopened items sold by Target in new condition can be returned within 90 days for a refund or exchange. For Target.com orders, the clock starts when you receive the item: when it's delivered, delivered by a Shipt shopper, or picked up in store.

Item Return window Notes
Most items sold by Target 90 days New, unopened condition
Target Owned Brand items 1 year With a receipt; refund or exchange
Electronics and entertainment (not Apple or Beats) 30 days
Apple and Beats products, including phones 14 days
Mobile phones bought in store or via Order Pickup 14 days Restocking charge may apply (see below)
Most beauty items, even opened 90 days With receipt; 120 days if bought with a Target Circle Card
Most items sold by Target Plus Partners 30 days Third-party sellers on Target.com; receipt required in store
Online purchases paid with EBT 90 days Required by SNAP
Baby and wedding registry gifts Up to 1 year after the event Most new, unopened items, using the registry return barcode
Wish list gifts 90 days after purchase Unopened items

Target Circle Card and Target Circle 360 get 30 extra days. Target says Target Circle debit and credit card holders, and Target Circle 360 members, get an extra 30 days to return nearly all items bought with their Target Circle Card. The extra time doesn't apply to Target Owned Brand items, Target Optical purchases, non-returnable items, contract mobile phones or online SNAP purchases paid with EBT.

Is there a holiday return window?

Target's help page says holiday and limited-time-only collections may have modified return policies, and limited-time designer launches typically have a shortened window of two weeks. Target has a help article on extended holiday returns, but it didn't load when we checked on Oct 22, 2026, so we couldn't confirm 2026 holiday dates. Check Target's returns page and your receipt before counting on extra time.

Exceptions and final sale items

Target lists these as final sale (no returns):

  • Trading cards and trading card accessories (for example, Pokémon and sports cards and binders)
  • Opened or defective collectibles, such as special edition dolls, action figures and die-cast cars
  • Personalized items and digital downloads
  • Opened or unsealed breast pumps
  • Gift cards, including Target GiftCards and prepaid Visa, Mastercard and American Express gift cards, except where the law requires otherwise
  • Select items sold by Target Plus Partners

Exchange only once opened:

  • Music, movies, video games and software can be exchanged for the same title (same or different platform).
  • Airbeds can be exchanged for a similar item.

Purchases from Target Optical, Warby Parker, the pharmacy, Starbucks and Target Tech must be returned to those areas. Target stores can't accept international returns.

Restocking fee on phones

Target says a restocking charge of up to $35 may apply to phones, except where prohibited, and it's taxed in some states. There's no restocking charge if the phone is unopened. Phones bought with a carrier contract may also trigger early termination fees, and contract phones must be returned in store with a Target Tech rep.

Returning to Target without a receipt

Target can often find your purchase for you. Return barcodes and receipts are in your Target account for online orders, and for store purchases paid with a card linked to your account or with Wallet in the Target app. The store can also try a receipt lookup if you bring the card you paid with.

Without any proof of purchase, Target says you may get a merchandise return card instead of a refund. Here's what to know about it:

  • You need a government-issued ID to get one.
  • It works only in Target stores, not on Target.com, and can't be turned into cash.
  • Its funds don't expire.

Target says items that are opened, damaged or without a receipt may be denied a refund or exchange. Without a receipt, returns may be limited. Target Plus items always need proof of purchase.

How to return something to Target

  1. In store: bring the item to Guest Services with your receipt, the return barcode from the Target app, or the card you paid with.
  2. Drive Up: start the return in the Target app and return it without leaving your car.
  3. By mail: in your Target account, open the order, choose Return and follow the prompts. Target emails a free label (UPS) or a QR code (FedEx). Include the item, packaging and accessories.
  4. Large items: most can go back to a store with no stocking fees. For a return pickup, call Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.

Gifts: with a gift receipt or packing slip, you get a Target GiftCard. Without one, you may get a merchandise return card. In-store gift receipt returns can't be done on the same day the gift was bought.

How refunds work

Refunds usually go back to your original payment method. Target GiftCard purchases come back as a new Target eGiftCard.

Refund to Typical timing after Target approves it
Target Circle Card Up to 2 days
Third-party credit card Up to 5 days
Mail returns to the Online Return Center About 7 to 10 business days to approve, after the return arrives

For mail returns, Target may refund you before it gets the item. If the item turns out to be ineligible, Target may charge your card again. With BOGO deals or free gifts, your refund is reduced by the discount or by the prorated value of the free gift.

How to never miss the Target return window

  • Keep the receipt, or pay with a card linked to your Target account so the purchase shows up in Wallet.
  • Take a photo of paper receipts, especially for Target Owned Brand items you might return months later.
  • Note the right window: 14 days for Apple and phones, 30 for electronics, 90 for most items.
  • Keep things unopened until you're sure. Opened items may be refused.
  • Set a reminder a few days before the deadline.

Every Item, our upcoming iPhone app (coming soon to the App Store), is built for this: it saves your receipts and reminds you before the return deadline.
