Amazon Return Policy: Return Windows, Fees and Exceptions

Last updated

This guide explains Amazon's return policy in plain English: how long you have, which items get shorter or longer windows, when Amazon charges a fee, and how fast refunds arrive. Every detail comes from Amazon's official help pages, linked in Sources. Policies change, so check the official page before you rely on it.

How many days do you have to return to Amazon?

According to the Amazon Return Policy, most items can be returned for a refund or replacement within 30 days of delivery, as long as they're in original or unused condition. Your exact deadline is the "return by date" in your return confirmation email or in Your Orders.

Return window What it covers
7 days Kindle books bought by accident and not read; digital textbooks and educational content not downloaded; songs or albums bought by accident with Alexa
15 days Apple and Boost Infinite products sold in new condition; Amazon Haul items over $3
30 days Most items
90 days Select Amazon Renewed items in Acceptable, Good or Excellent condition; most nonperishable baby products; mattresses (not crib mattresses); gifts bought from a Birthday or Custom Gift List by someone other than the list owner
180 days Gifts bought from an Amazon Wedding Registry by someone other than the registry owner
365 days Amazon Renewed Premium items; gifts bought from an Amazon Baby Registry by someone other than the registry owner

Check the product page before you buy. Amazon says each item's return eligibility is shown there, and in your order history after you order.

Is there a holiday return window?

As of Oct 22, 2026, Amazon's official return policy page doesn't list a 2026 holiday extension. Amazon has extended its return window for holiday purchases in past years, so it may announce one later. Don't count on extra time until it appears on Amazon's own pages or in your order's "return by date."

Return fees

Amazon says returns are generally free, and most items include at least one free return option. Fees can apply in these cases:

Fee When it applies Amount
Return shipping fee You pick a drop-off or shipping option that isn't free, return a heavy or bulky item, or have an unusually high return rate Varies by item and shipping method
Late fee You don't drop off the item (or complete a carrier pickup) by the return by date 20% of the item price for the first 30 days after the return by date; 100% after that
Damage fee The item comes back damaged, missing parts, not in original condition, with tags removed or with obvious use (not Amazon's or the seller's fault) Up to 50% of the item price (100% for Amazon Luxury items)
Restocking fee Software and video games that are opened, activated, used or missing parts; opened collectible cards, board games and collectible figurines 100% of the item price

Heavy or bulky items are those that weigh 50 lbs or more, have a longest side over 59 inches when packed, or have a girth over 130 inches. These may cost money to return, and some need a home pickup appointment.

Items you can't return

Amazon lists these as non-returnable:

  • Perishables
  • Products that may pose health and safety risks if returned
  • Products with shipping restrictions
  • Customized products made for you
  • Redeemable products
  • Amazon Pharmacy products and pet medications
  • Certain digital products
  • Automobiles

Items marked Final Sale can't be returned or refunded either. That includes trading card games, some discounted items and Amazon Haul items that cost $3 or less. If a non-returnable item arrives damaged, defective or different from what you ordered, contact Amazon Customer Service.

Opened items and condition

Return items in original or unused condition, with tags attached, hygiene seals and liners intact, and in the original manufacturer's packaging with all components, accessories and manuals. Otherwise you may get a damage fee (see above). If you saved personal information on a computer or other device, erase it by following the manufacturer's instructions before you send it back.

Two more rules worth knowing:

  • Bundles: you must return every item in a "Bundle with Savings" to get a refund. Partial refunds aren't available.
  • Discounts: if an item helped you qualify for a discount, Amazon reduces your refund to account for it.

Receipts, gifts and ID

Amazon orders live in your account, so you don't need a paper receipt. Start a return from Your Orders by choosing "Return Items."

Returning a gift? Use the 17-digit order number on the packing slip or digital gift receipt on Amazon's Returns page. If you can't find it, ask the gift giver. For a different size or item, return the gift and place a new order.

Amazon says it may ask for more information during a return, such as a government-issued photo ID, and it can deny returns or add fees if it suspects fraud or abuse.

How refunds work

Amazon issues the refund once it (or the third-party seller) receives the item and confirms you're eligible. It can take up to 30 days to receive and process a return. After the refund is issued:

Refund method Typical timing after the refund is issued
Amazon gift card balance 2 to 3 hours
Credit card 3 to 5 business days
Shop with Points Up to 5 business days
Debit card, checking account, EBT card, cash (participating locations) Up to 10 business days
Prepaid credit card Up to 30 days, depending on the issuer
Promotional certificate No refund issued

Third-party sellers that ship their own items handle their own returns. Amazon says they must give you a US return address, a prepaid return label, or a full refund without asking for the item back.

How to never miss the Amazon return window

  • Look at the return by date the day you start a return, and drop the item off before it. Late fees start at 20%.
  • Count from the delivery date and use the right window: 15 days for new Apple products, not 30.
  • Keep the box and every accessory until you're sure you're keeping the item.
  • Take a photo of the item and packing slip before you send it back, in case of a dispute.
  • Set a reminder a few days before the deadline so you have time to get to a drop-off location.

Every Item, our upcoming iPhone app (coming soon to the App Store), is built for this: it saves your receipts and reminds you before the return deadline.
